Allow Goochland Dentistry to keep gum disease at bay by providing you with exceptional care to maintain healthy gums and treatment for any gum disease that may arise.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is signified by deep pockets, which are defined spaces between the teeth and the gumline. Pockets measuring more than 3mm and frequently bleed serve as two indicators for infection and gum disease. Another symptom of periodontal disease is bad breath.

Periodontal therapy has been proven to improve both the health of your gums and teeth after treatment. Dr. Murchie and his experienced team approach your periodontal therapy in a variety of ways, depending on your specific needs:

Scaling

This process removes plaque, calculus, stains, and bacteria throughout the entire tooth, as well as the tooth pocket of your gum line. Modern technology utilizes high-frequency vibrations that soften more stubborn decay and bacteria, making their removal that much easier.

Root Planing

Root planing is an integral part of the scaling process. Dr. Murchie will use a medical instrument called a “curette,” which removes plaque and diseased tissue, before smoothing the root of your tooth. The entire process will encourage your tooth to move in the right direction, helping it to reattach to the gum line.

Crown Lengthening

This treatment is known to fix a “gummy” smile. The condition causes the teeth to appear short when the gum line extends too far and covers a portion of the tooth. To provide a more natural, balanced smile, Dr. Murchie will remove excess gum and bone tissue in a minimally-invasive procedure.

A numbing or local anesthetic will be offered to ensure your comfort and relaxation throughout the procedure.

At-home care can vary, but available options include antibiotics, rinses, and fluoride treatments. Electric toothbrushes are also a simple but effective way to combat daily plaque and bacteria, while also promoting healthy gums.

Follow-up appointments will be scheduled so that Dr. Murchie can monitor your ongoing progress toward a healthier mouth. You’ll receive the support of our entire team throughout your periodontal treatment and beyond.
